Shila Hotel - Athens
January 2021
Mantzarou, a soft pedestrian street in Kolonaki, was quiet this year. Athens in August is bathed in ancient rays, as Shila welcomes me with exquisite and unique taste, like an old friend I haven’t seen in ages.
In the early afternoon I arrived from Rome. I dropped my belongings at the hotel and made my way to the Acropolis just in time for sunset. I haven’t been in the city since childhood, and it feels different this time. The whole world feels different. I can now appreciate the beauty even more. Walking back during that magic hour, drenched in golden Greek light, the neoclassical architecture and intimate entrance of the hotel reminds me of my hometown - Barcelona.
Each room at Shila feels like a cozy film score holding an elegant, flirty note. It is rare to find places where the art matches the setting so delicately. I wander between the lobby and the library, peeking through books and tapping a piano key. Winding up the spiral staircase, I enter my room. As I open the balcony doors, I am invited to observe the different styles of architecture, and the people, quietly returning home.
In the morning, after strong coffee and a delicious bowl of fresh fruits, I start to photograph the hotel with the help of Eftihia. I could spend days in each room noticing its details and textures. Each setting presents its own little world.
When the day comes to an end, I unwind on the jungly rooftop, watching the shadows of the buildings, and the surrounding plants attempt a move. A balmy Tuesday night. Before my departure the next day, I run into a friend from Los Angeles, checking-in the hotel.
No two experiences are alike.
